About the Venue
Porta lives in the building that formerly operated as a nightclub known as the Student Prince. It is most celebrated in New Jersey rock history as the exact spot where Bruce Springsteen and saxophonist Clarence Clemons first met and played together in September of 1971.
By 1984, the Student Prince had transformed into Xanadu, a dance club selected by Springsteen as the testing ground for “Dancing in the Dark,” the soon-to-be-hit from his “Born in the U.S.A.” LP – and the crowd in attendance reportedly loved what they heard.
Reopened in 2011 under the name Porta, it currently operates as a restaurant, nightclub, and event venue.
“Porta” (Italian for “door”) stems from the eclectic, discarded wooden doors decorating its rustic interior.
